Mama Update: (Day 4) God-Winks
Wednesday evening update on mama, Bonnie Spencer Kitchens..
I guess we could look at all of the obstacles that are right in front of us, or we could celebrate the small victories.
We are learning that you celebrate the small victories with stroke patients.
(That might be a word for all of us. Take a minute and celebrate the small victories in life, the little God-winks, they’re there for a reason. Sure, obstacles abound, reality is still difficult, but there’s good news if we recognize it.)
Today’s God-winks include:
-Mama fed herself again, and even showed Wayne Kitchens that you can drink applesauce if you want to.
-Today is Jeremy Kitchens birthday. And while we miss him dearly, the speech therapist sang, “happy birthday” to him in heaven while mama just smiled. She was showing us how music can help trigger response. And it was an extremely special moment for sure.
-When given a hairbrush today, and with little prompting, she was able to brush her hair on her own. My brother has been working with her for hours; we’re pretty sure Jay Bailey missed his calling as a Physical Therapist!
-And at one point she put her glasses on and started flipping through a magazine. For a second everything looked normal. She looked at every page and it appeared like she was reading. It was all reflex muscle memory, but man, for just a second..whew.
-And praise the Lord, no surgery. The doctor just put in orders to move her out of ICU and into a regular neurology room. We’re hoping to make that jump tomorrow and then off to rehab somewhere (crossing our fingers for Shepherd Center.)
Yes, there are a ton of obstacles right now, but today we celebrate the God-winks. It’s been a good day.
Thank you again for your prayers and support.
